Arthur Radley

My name is Arthur, but I have heard people refer to me as "Boo." This makes me feel hurt, because it means people think I am some monster that comes out in the night. It means that I am like a ghost, you know I am here inside, but you cant see me, and it means I am there to come up behind your shoulder any say "Boo!" rather than leaving a blanket over your shoulders. The children don't realize it, but through my window I watch them playing games with their friend Dill. At times I wish I could go outside and be in the game too, but I can't for some reason. I want them to know that I am not scary and I cant hurt them. Nobody really knows me, because I am far too scared to go outside and have people see me. I am afraid that they will judge me, and everybody will whisper and stare. I have changed since I was younger. I discreetly help Scout and Jem Finch though. One time I put a blanket over Scout when she was outside in the cold. I leave gifts for them inside of a tree, and saved them from an attack. I do help them, because I really want to be friends with them, and let them know I am harmless. I envy how they can run around town in the daylight and nobody will be there to judge them. Hearing the Finch's and their friend talk and make fun of me, just makes me want to run outside and say "I am not mean! I am good! There is nothing wrong with me!" And perhaps someday I will, when I gain my confidence and when Jem and Scout come to realize I'm not a ghost, or a murderer, or a monster. I am simply a human being, who has changed a lot. I hope Jem and Scout realize that because of all the little nice things I have done for them, that they should not be afraid of me, and they should not make fun of me.
Truly and Sincerely,
Arthur Radley
